In Resistance: Fall of Man, the U.S. and Britain band together in a last-ditch effort to save Europe and Asia from a horrific scourge. In mere decades, the Chimera – a species of unknown origin propagating a virus that converts other life forms into more Chimera – has overrun Russia and all of Europe. Humanity’s hope for survival is slim, and the tide of the battle rests on the shoulders of U.S. Army Ranger, Sgt. Nathan Hale.

Being the developers of a lead game in a high profile console launch must be an unenviable position. Outside of the normal pressures of making a good game critics and consumers are looking to that title to define the value of the console as a whole. With some console launches, the 360, the PS2, there’s no one standout game so everyone shares the responsibility. Halo on the original Xbox and now Resistance: Fall of Man for the PS3, share that other, more dubious honor, as lightning rods for all the speculation on the future success of the new system. Having said that this review of Resistance, is just that, only a review of Resistance, whether or not it’s a reason to buy what I consider to being an onerously priced system is between you, your tastes and your wallet.

Traveling through the beautifully designed game world, which is filled with burned out and abandoned buildings throughout England, as well as alien structures and Chimera that range from scorpion/spider like creatures that run at you in droves to those which jump from surface to surface with ease while shooting, you get to see the graphical power of the PS3, though not in a way comparable to the likes of Gears of War or Rainbow Six Vegas. It’s less gritty than those aforementioned games, but cleaner in its detail, with the dreary color palate truly becoming a key part of the experience.

Insomniac’s weaponry is imaginative. The Bullseye allows you to tag a target, then send a barrage of bullets toward the target, wherever it may run. And that is just the tip of the weapons cache. From the auger (which has the secondary ability to drop a shield in front of the user) that fires through walls and other solid objects to the air-gas grenades that create a nice little inferno. Insomniac is long known for its creative weapons and the toys that are in this game feel appropriate for the game, the alien-type technology and enhance the entertainment value

But let’s be honest, Resistance doesn’t have to be perfect to be fun, and fun is exactly what it is. From start to finish, Fall of Man is one hell of an outstanding roller coaster ride that every last PS3 owner needs for day one. Epic boss battles (the final few are crazy!), ever-changing scenery, addictive weaponry, and a unique thematic are just a few of the reasons Resistance stands out. But above all else, it’s the multiplayer elements that truly ascend this one to the next level. It’s a must have for sure.

Despite my very positive experience with Resistance: Fall of Man, I would stop just short of calling it a system seller. Few games in history could sell a $600 console on their own, and Resistance ultimately is not the kind of impact title that could do it. Still, Resistance is an excellent, refined first-person shooter that would be among the best titles on any console in any year. Between the memorable single-player mode and the silky-smooth online play, Resistance provides an experience that, while occasionally familiar, is always worthwhile. If you already took the plunge on a PlayStation 3, skip the numerous also-rans and join this Resistance A.S.A.P.

Resistance is an incredible game for a launch title, much like Halo was for the original Xbox. Resistance does nothing to truly advance the genre, but it does everything right. Frame rate is rock solid with lots of enemies and effects on screen. Vehicle based levels feel like more of an afterthought, but they fit the story perfectly. The weapons selection and abilities are one of the best in any FPS. I have a feeling this is one game that everyone will want to take home on launch day.

Having established themselves as a leading PlayStation 2 developer with the hugely entertaining and inventive Ratchet & Clank series, it was time for Insomniac to break out and move on. The result is Resistance: Fall of Man, a first person shooter that leads the PlayStation 3 invasion into Europe.Fittingly we have a game that is based in Great Britain, or England to be more precise including such cultural centres as Grimsby, Bristol, Nottingham, Manchester, York and London. This is a refreshing change from the staple diet of American cities or Oriental backdrops and serves a purpose within the story. England is the remaining European outpost that is resisting the might of the mysterious Chimera forces, who have broken out from Russia and infected everything within their path. With America sitting on the sidelines watching and fearing the worst, eventually they pitch in to help out our boys with their vast resources.

In Resistance, an alternate reality Europe has fallen under siege by a mutated race of humanoids known as the Chimera. Having broken containment in Russia and spread throughout Europe, it was only a matter of time before the British were overrun. America, a spectator to the devastation for the longest time, finally agrees to send support to England. On it’s way to meet with British intelligence to learn of these beasts and what they are in store for, Sergeant Hale and his unit are attacked, forced to repel an enemy the know very little about.

The story for Resistance revolves around the war between humanity and a new type of enemy called the Chimera. The events for the game take place right around the time of World War II and in this alternate timeline, said event never happened. Instead, the Chimera have taken advantage of the political turmoil between nations and captured most of Asia and Europe. The United Kingdom still stands as Europe’s last line of defense and the United States deploys troops to stop the Chimera menace from ever reaching the West. Nathan Hale is a member of these troops, but instead of dying like the rest of his team, he actually develops a sort of immunity to the alien virus. The infection gives him special Chimeran abilities for use in combat. With the help of some local allies, Nathan must take down the Chimeran menace and take back earth for humanity. The premise is certainly interesting enough but not much is done with the story elements. Most of the plot points are told through some still images and impressive in-game cutscenes. The story isn’t the best to ever grace an FPS, but it certainly gets the job done.

Combat is a lot more fun than other FPS games thanks to a great selection of weapons and an arsenal that grows all the way to the very end. You’ll start off with only two or three guns, but by the end you’ll be using the radial menu to choose from all sorts of human, alien, and experimental US weaponry, each with exciting primary and secondary functions. There is also a fun assortment of grenades including my favorite; the Air-Fuel grenade that disperses a cloud of gas then ignites the entire room on fire burning anybody and everything inside.

We constantly found ourselves asking why the whole game doesn’t look as impressive as certain sections. Buildings, walls and objects sometimes reminded us of Lummines – clean, square and perfectly slotted next to each other.

One of Resistance ‘s cooler aspects is its imaginative storyline, which takes place in an alternate reality in which World War II didn’t occur. Alas, they have other problems, not the least of which are the Chimera, a race of inhuman monsters that silently encroached over Asia and Europe throughout the ’30s and ’40s.

A new console is often accompanied by a lackluster set of games from developers who haven’t adjusted to the new technology, but the Wii hits the ground running. Monster Game’s racing game Excite Truck lets you hold each end of the controller as though you are holding a steering wheel; you can even steer when you’ve flown off a sand dune high into the air. Sega’s Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz lets you move a ball down long curved ramps by tilting the remote back and forth. In Electronic Arts’ Madden NFL 07, you pass the ball or dance past an opponent by jostling the controller.

The game handles like your standard FPS; most guns have a first and secondary fire mode, and when you’re taking a pasting in combat you can take cover to regenerate a portion of your health, Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay’s recovery mode you don’t heal fully, only enough to withstand a small amount of hot alien laser to the face. The six axis feature isn’t put to much work, making a brief cameo to shake off Chimera who get too close, or bringing up the map in multiplayer.

Other weapons, like the Bullseye, do add something to the gameplay, but it’s marketing spin gone mad to suggest that it adds more than an increment of an increment. Being able to ‘tag’ someone and duck around a corner and giggle as your bullets get drawn to your hapless victim is an undeniably cool moment, but it’s a novelty that wears off pretty quickly (besides, you soon realise that it’s just as effective to pick them off as you normally would, which is kind of where such innovations fade into the background).

Resistance: Fall of Man is first in four different categories. It’s a first person shooter, obviously. It came out on the first day. It’s a first party game since it’s published by SCEA. Finally, it’s the first game that everyone who owns a PlayStation 3 before the end of the year should buy immediately. Insomniac Games, of Ratchet & Clank fame, brings its creative weapons experience to a brand new system for stunning toys of destruction. The unique storyline, next-generation visuals and 40-player online multiplayer also make for a great introduction to the PS3. For some, it may not exhibit the full power promised by the launch hype or come close to warranting more than half a grand for the console alone. Nevertheless, Resistance is a fine FPS exclusive for fans of the genre and anyone that wants a solid first game within the launch window.
