We now have a rumor suggesting that Marvel’s Wolverine will be releasing as soon as next year.
As reported by Tech4Gamers, there are two sources making this claim. While this of course does not equal Sony actually confirming this, having multiple sources corroborate does give it more credence. The first source is Jeff Grubb, simply sharing the rumor on an episode of his Game Mess podcast. As is the case with many other games media with insider sources, Grubb is definitely sitting on even more rumors that he isn’t sharing. When he decides to go ahead to share one like this, it’s because he got the clearance that it’s likely to be legit, and on another level, that sharing the news won’t compromise his source. The second source is an ArtStation account. Hung Nguy, who did work on concept art for Marvel’s Wolverine, listed a 2024 release date on his account. We do need to contextualize these ArtStation leaks or reveals. Many artists in the video game industry do share work in pre-production or conceptualization on the website. It’s less likely that they will be sharing actual CG models or rigs used in the games that were published. Obviously, the game companies in question would hold copyright over those art assets, and their being revealed would be tantamount to compromising company trade secrets. So, when we see information about games on ArtStation, this is usually information that is no longer relevant, or only applies to the art in question. In this case, Hung Nguy may have been working on Marvel’s Wolverine art with the expectation that the project would be released in 2024. But, he may also have not been involved with the rest of the game’s production. Therefore, he wouldn’t know if Insomniac still has Marvel’s Wolverine on track for 2024, or if it was just an estimated date for the purposes of work. It’s easy to understand why this rumor would go viral. Sony has yet to reveal any major first party game releases for the PlayStation 5 for 2024. Marvel’s Wolverine may have a lot of hype behind it, but fans would be eager to get confirmation for any first party games releasing next year.So it’s important for those fans to hold onto those expectations for now. It will only do the project more harm if it turns out Insomniac takes another year or two to make Marvel’s Wolverine, and gamer expectations were dashed. As we have seen, Insomniac has a hard set limit on the scope of their projects, which allows them to deliver games in a reasonable time frame. Marvel’s Wolverine will be no different, so we may get the game that soon, but fans shouldn’t ruin it for themselves by acting like it was already confirmed.Marvel’s Wolverine will be releasing exclusively to the PlayStation 5.
